ROYALE PROJECTS : CONTEMPORARY ART was thrilled to present new work that capitalizes on reductive elegance by artist Phillip K Smith, III. Through a careful selection of the artist's time-based, light sculptures the gallery seeks to reflect the pure, immersive and meditative experience Smith's work commands. Smith's LIGHTWORKS are designed to have specific combinations of colors that penetrate ringed depths of acrylic at a slow, undulating pace, illuminating the objects themselves and the ambient space around them. These sculptures draw the viewer in with mesmerizing sequences of seductive hues and quiet, transformative shifts. Over time, the encounter realigns one’s sensory priorities. Phillip K Smith, III received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design. Drawing inspiration from the rigidity of the Bauhaus movement, the reductive geometries of minimalism, and the optic sensation of California's Light and Space movement, Smith attempts to resolve the complex challenge of finding a natural state of life and spirit within these ideological, aesthetic constrictions.
